Enter Get Set’s ‘What’s in a Name?’ competition and your school could have the honour of naming a new apple and being a part of the London 2012 Paralympic legacy.

A new variety of apple will be grown in an orchard at Mandeville Place – the name of which is up to you and your pupils!

Mandeville Place, a special new area situated in the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in East London, is being created as part of London’s Paralympic Legacy Programme in recognition of the amazing achievements of Paralympic athletes and to celebrate the Values that made the London 2012 Paralympic Games such a success. The name Mandeville Place has been chosen to reflect the fact that the Paralympics started in Stoke Mandeville, England in 1952, and after the 2012 Mascot, Mandeville.

Taking inspiration from the use of apples in the London 2012 Paralympic Opening Ceremony, a stunning orchard is due to open at the core (!) of the Park in spring 2015 and schools are being offered the chance to name a brand new variety of apple that will be grown there.

The delicious new apple variety is being developed by mixing pollen from different apple blossoms and is only the third new apple variety to have been created in UK in the past 50 years. Enter Get Set’s ‘What’s in a Name?’ competition and you and your pupils could have the honour of naming the new apple and help make history!

As well as the main prize of naming the new variety of apple, two pupils from the winning school will be invited to attend an event at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in Spring 2015 and the school will also receive the same type of apple tree to plant in the school grounds.

The competition is open until midday 3rd December, at which point entries will be judged by a panel including Paralympic gold medallist Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson, London 2012 Paralympic Games Opening Ceremony Artistic Directors Bradley Hemmings and Jenny Sealey, former Paralympic sprinter Danny Crates and local young and disabled people. Full terms and conditions about the competition are available here.
